Mika Utzon: Nintendo’s Art Academy - Sunday 28 November 11am, The Rocks

Saturday, November 20, 2010

Love your Nintendo DS? Love drawing?

What are you doing next Sunday?

To celebrate the launch of one of Nintendo’s latest games - Art Academy - Sydney-siders are invited to come along to a free outdoor art class hosted by acclaimed artist Mika Utzon Popov.

Utzon Popov will use Art Academy to show how anyone from beginners to experts can create their own works of art!

Now, I don't know about you, but this intrigues me, primarily because I don't consider myself arty - at all. Plus, I'd be thrilled to pick up tips to show my twins, and get them in touch with their inner artistes. Just this week my daughter swapped my iPhone wallpaper from a standard cute baby pic to one with... the Mona Lisa! My pals were totally convinced it was a sign of things to come for little Estella.

The event will be held on Sunday 28 November, at 11am at The Rocks, but you must register.

Mika Utzon Popov will take the first 100 lucky people to register through a tutorial in painting and drawing techniques, and then they will be given the opportunity to draw Australia’s most iconic building – The Sydney Opera House - on their Nintendo DS, with the aid of Art Academy.

Not only is Utzon Popov an established artist, he is also the grandson of The Sydney Opera House’s designer, Jørn Utzon.

The fortunate 100 people will not only receive a free Art Academy game to play with, they will be in the running to win Nintendo prizes, when Utzon Popov judges the winning art work. If you are interested in attending the Art Academy class, come equipped with your own Nintendo DS, but if you don’t have one, you can still participate on the day as there will be Nintendo DS consoles on hand to borrow.

The day will actually begin with an intensive art class inside the Park Hyatt, where Utzon Popov will divulge his tips and tricks, on the finer points of the game, and arm the students with the tools with which to unearth their inner artist. Once the students have learnt the ropes, they’ll be let loose at Campbell’s Cove where they will paint their own impressions of The Sydney Opera House using their Nintendo DS.

To secure your spot in the Art Academy class register at:

And if you can’t pre-register, they are also offering a space to the first 50 people who arrive at the Park Hyatt Hotel, at the Boardroom Library, Park Hyatt Hotel, 7 Hickson Road, The Rocks, Sydney from 10am.

So, it's 10am for new registrations, 10.30am for pre-registrations, and the art class will commence at 11am until 1pm. Be there!
