Lauren Conrad: Allure magazine, May 2011

Monday, April 18, 2011

The Hills reality TV star and author Lauren Conrad features in the May 2011 edition of US Allure magazine.

"I'm not a sexy person," says the 25-year-old in the accompanying interview.

"I'm OK with it. I've never been the sexy girl. Whenever I've had a boyfriend, he's always been like, 'Oh, you're cute."

Conrad added that she's self-conscious about her thighs - and carries a large bag to hide them. Conrad claims though that she'll never undergo plastic surgery.

She says her Hills co-star Heidi Montag, who has had more than 10 procedures, should be viewed as a cautionary tale. "I don't think this is a happy story at all, there's just no right answer there," she said of Montag.

Avon Hervé Léger Femme and Golden Twilight Nailwear Pro Nail Enamel

Sunday, April 17, 2011

Have you checked out Avon lately?

The beauty website that's been around for eons has recently produced some new classics. Here are two of my faves:

Hervé Léger Femme ($59.99, 50ml), which is the latest fragrance from the global company, inspired by the famed designer (the true pioneer of the body-con dress). With a seductive blend of fresh, floral and honey woods, Avon’s Hervé Léger Femme opens with top notes of Chinese magnolia flower and Sicilian pink grapefruit (delish!).

The fragrance continues into the heart with notes of Moroccan orange flower and sensual honeywood. It dries down with notes of warm benzoin tears, cypress woods and classic vanilla. The glass bottle captures the modern iconic shape of the Hervé Léger dress, echoing the bandage effect.

And my next new fave is the Nailwear Pro Nail Enamel in Golden Twilight. This shade differs from the rest of the myriad dark shades in that it has a gorgeous glistening effect on nails. A new customised flat brush with triangular bristles ensures smooth, even, streak-free application with high-shine and a glossy finish.

This Nailwear Pro Nail Enamel shade($14.99) and the new Hervé Léger Femme are available through Avon Representatives.

Anne Hathaway: Nars lips and large specs at Rio premiere

Wednesday, April 13, 2011

There are two things I love about these red carpet photos of Anne Hathaway at premiere of the highly anticipated movie Rio.

One is Anne's new specs. Not only that she is wearing glasses on a red carpet, I especially love the frame's look, shape and lens size.

It's kinda old school geek, early 1990s large-ish frames, with a modern twist.

I had a pair of sorta similar specs in the 90s - they were considered very cool way back then. Then something happened - all frames took on that rectangular-framed look.

I wear specs daily - a gorgeous gold-rimmed Dior pair with teeny jewels on the arms. I love them. But I've been wanting to upgrade for a while. I spied a new Alex Perry for Specsavers pair I love, sporting this new shape. So I am loving Anne's tortoiseshell number.

The second thing I love about this pic is Anne's lips.

Specifically, her lip colour. A little snooping has revealed it is the handiwork of cult makeup brand Nars; Nars worked with Anne Hathaway’s makeup artist Molly Stern, who played up her eyes and kept her lips nude with the aid of new Summer 2011 products Bolero Velvet Matte Lip Pencil, and Mayflower Lipstick.

“The new Bolero Velvet Matte Lip Pencil is the perfect apricot nude, with a dash of baby pink,” said Molly about Anne’s lip colour. “We wanted to keep it balanced, but fun and fresh. We were listening to Patti Smith while getting ready – so we incorporated a bit of a rock ‘n roll edge!”

For beauty addicts, here is what else Molly used: Nars Copacabana Illuminator (which is new for Spring 2011) and NARS Sex Appeal Blush. On the eyes, Nars Daphne Eyeshadow, Nars Exotic Dance Duo Eyeshadow (new for Summer 2011, Nars Coconut Grove Eyeshadow, and Nars Larger Than Life Volumising Mascara.

All products are available at www.narscosmetics.com. Summer 2011 products are available from April 15th.

Nars is exclusive to Mecca Cosmetica in Australia; call 1800 007 844 for stockist details, or visit www.meccacosmetica.com.au

Fleur de Lys Medispa: 30% discount offer for Josie's Juice readers

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Offer for Josie's Juice readers! For the entire month of April (effective today, and valid through to and including May 1, 2011) Fleur de Lys Medispa is offering 30% off all body and facial treatments (excluding waxing, manicure and pedicure).

Fleur de Lys Medispa is a magnificent tribute to ancient Moroccan traditions offering an oasis with calm settings, the scent of rare oils, soft light, candles and Moroccan adornments, designed to stimulate your senses and soothe and rejuvenate inner health and wellbeing. The team at Fleur de Lys are highly trained and qualified therapists. And if you're already thinking about sharing this experience with your partner or friend, they have rooms designed to offer treatments for couples. Fleur de Lys Medispa is the brainchild of renowned aesthetician Linda Wehbi. "We have created an oasis of luxurious indulgence in the heart of Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs offering exclusive effective treatments, we want client to have a total experience not just another treatment," she says.

Opening its doors seven months ago at 2A Queen Street Woollahra (on the corner of Queen and Oxford Street Paddington), the Fleur de Lys 'unofficial ambassador' Natalie Gruzlewski says of the haven: "A truly amazing experience! From the moment you walk into Fleur de Lys Medispa you are enchanted by the beautiful scents, the professionalism of Linda and her staff and their friendly approach. The attention to detail throughout the medispa assures you that they have everything covered to ensure that you are relaxed and comfortable including a wide and unique selection of treatments which always deliver incredible results which are carried out with such love and attention that keeps you wanting to come back for more..."

The Fleur de Lys signature treatment is the Moroccan Hammam - think an oasis of steam, beautifully tiled walls, the scents of oriental oils and perfumes and the soothing comfort and echoes of running water, while relaxing on a heated marble which helps stimulate blood circulation and opens the skin pores - heavenly.

They also offer a full body exfoliation using a special traditional Moroccan glove and the Desert Sand Body Scrub, the Arabian Dreaming Body Scrub, and the Royal Oriental Hammam, the last of which is designed to rejuvenate skin and hair - starting with applying traditional Moroccan black olive eucalyptus all over the body and hair, a full body wrap of cleansing and oxygenating mask of Rhassoul clay and rose water, followed by a luxurious massage using oriental sensual oils.

More? What about the Pure 24 Carat Gold Facial Treatment? Employing a new technology used for the first time in Australia, combined with a pure 24 carat gold, the objective is to deliver glowing, radiant skin. In ancient Rome, gold salves were used for the treatment of a variety of skin problems. Gold was also regarded as the key to youth in ancient Chinese medicine - the queen of the Ch’ing dynasty used a gold massage roller on her face every day.

Gold slows down collagen depletion and the breakdown of elastin to prevent sagging skin. It stimulates cellular growth of the basal layer to regenerate healthy, firm skin cells and provide a tightening effect. It also reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; delivered with a new technology, it is said to lock in moisture for softer, more supple skin, reduces the appearance of sun damage and age spots. Gold’s anti-inflammatory properties also decrease skin inflammation, which slows down melanin secretion and reduced age spots.

This is the treatment I will be trialing soon at Fleur de Lys Medispa - I can't wait to report back.

In the meantime, head to the website http://www.fleurdelysmedispa.com.au/ and see what this haven has to offer... and take advantage of the 30% discount (don't forget to mention the Josie's Juice blog offer).

The designer and master perfumer has once again chosen a globally recognised film star to represent this renowned, sweet scent called Angel (Aussie Naomi Watts was the most recent 'face' of the fragrance).

The delicious Eva is now the newest "Angel", described by the brand as someone who "personifies the very facets of sensuality encompassing an Angel."

L’Oréal Paris Baroque Glamour Collection - for 2011 L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival

Sunday, March 13, 2011

To help celebrate the 2011 L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival - kicking off today, Monday 14 March, until Sunday 20 March - L’Oréal Paris has introduced the Baroque Glamour Collection, this season’s sophisticated colour story created by L’Oréal Paris and LMFF Make-up Director, Rae Morris.

Inspired by the glamorous beauty looks of the 1940s and 1950s, the Baroque Glamour Collection brings retro glamour back into the spotlight - oh, how I love this look, especially as it is modelled here by the delectable Laetitia Casta.

With the 1940s and 50s staging a comeback, it's super-easy to re-create the timeless, classic looks of this era with this L'Oreal collection. The keys are flawless skin, elegant-looking eyes, and striking red lips - the makeup elements seen in silver-screen starlets from decades ago, oozing supreme style and sophistication.

“This look is all about the ultimate woman and celebrates femininity within all its different layers and forms. Make-up trends come and go but these are desirable, polished beauty looks that are always in fashion,” says makeup director, Rae Morris.

The Baroque Glamour Collection includes a selection of new L’Oréal Paris products: for the flawless base try new Infallible Brush Foundation which combines a foundation brush and natural-finish, long-wear formula in one handy product. A combination of new Infallible Eyeshadow and Million Lashes Mascara will create smouldering, statement eyes that captivate and, for a pin-up pout, sample shades from the Colour Riche Intense range to make an impact with some traffic-stopping colour.

Possibly my fave part is the retro hair style - set with long-standing haircare staple, Elnett Satin hairspray.

The Baroque Glamour Collection is in-store now, only from Priceline and Myer stores nationally.

For stockists, call: 1300 659 259.

Proactiv: newer, better... and why we hate zits in social media

Monday, March 7, 2011

According to new research from Proactiv, our physical appearance on social media is more important to us than many day to day activities.

This should hardly be surprising considering the primping and preening evident in most Facebook profile photos!

In the recent survey from Australia’s No.1 "acne brand", a third of respondents said they would rather go without Facebook for a week than see themselves on YouTube with acne.

Social media vanity was the highest ranking concern when comparing the results to missing the sales and going for a date with a pimple between the eyes (29%), having no deodorant for a week and having pimples on their passport photo (23%), or even having no phone coverage for a week and bumping into their favourite movie star with a zit on their nose (15% - though kinda unlikely to happen, right?)

And of the 86 per cent of people who admit to having pimples, 18 per cent would be embarrassed to speak in front of others and four in ten (38%) would either reschedule social engagements or avoid having their photo taken.

Proactiv’s Brand Manager, Susan Leahy, commented: “Increasingly, social media is being used as a platform for people to broadcast their own brand both personally and professionally. And with most social media sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter now having the ability to attach photos to your page/CV/updates, there is more scrutiny from others than ever before.

She continues: “Our physical appearance is a major part of how we present ourselves to the world, so it is natural that people feel self-conscious about their skin and would be embarrassed by a breakout of pimples."

Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Avril Lavigne are all appearing in the new advertisements for "New Proactiv" and each one is said to be a fan and real user of the brand, claiming it changed the way they approach skincare. I don't know about you, but this new slew of celebs endorsing the product has really sold it for me. I have tried the newer formulation of Proactiv and can now see what everyone's been raving about - it makes your skin feel instantly fresh and alive.

The new-sized 30 day supply of the Proactiv 3 Step System is available for an intro price of $29.95 (+$9.95 p&h). You'll also get two free gifts: New Proactiv Cleansing Body Bar and The Doctors’ Secrets book, all of which comes with a full 60 day money-back guarantee.

For more information, please visit http://www.newproactiv.com.au/ or call 1300 664 011.

Dr. Katie Rodan gives a backgrounder on the dreaded zits:

“Acne and pimples begin deep inside the skin. Oil is released – it combines with dead cells and forms a plug like a cork in a bottle. And then the oil backs up. The bacteria that live on the skin naturally begin to grow, and you end up with a clogged angry pore.

The difference with Proactiv is that it’s about the prevention of blemishes appearing in the first place. Through using Proactiv you can take control of your skin and maintain it in a good condition.

And now, Australia’s No. 1 acne brand is new and improved. NEW Proactiv® is faster and gentler* on skin. The secret is the exclusive micro-crystal technology, which penetrates fast for rapid zit fighting action to help manage those breakouts, so you can have clearer, fresher-looking skin at any age.

Another spokesperson to join the ranks includes the women’s world No. 1 female tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.

After battling breakouts in the public eye for quite some time, 20-year-old Wozniacki decided to try Proactiv after recommendations from her friends. After a week she started to see results and her self confidence grew immensely.

“I was so happy, and I didn't want to hide anymore. I'm glad I have Proactiv. A lot of athletes struggle with their skin because we're always sweating, and we're under a lot of stress,” she said.

“I see other girls in the locker room trying to cover their pimples with makeup, but they know it's not going to work. The minute you start sweating, it comes right off. When they ask me how I keep my skin so nice, I always tell them about Proactiv."

(*Based on US user group survey, January 2010).

Rihanna and Nivea: a new partnership

Friday, March 4, 2011

Music phenomenon Rihanna - currently performing at her first Sydney concert - has just been announced as the "voice of Nivea's 100 year celebration" - and here is a sneak peek of her stunning photo for the brand.

The new Nivea brand campaign is called “100 Years Skincare for Life”.

It will consist of a series of global activities throughout the year starting in May and will include a huge marketing campaign, globally aligned point of sale activity, and a multi-channel consumer digital campaign, aimed at a younger target audience.

Moroccanoil Light - perfect for fine-haired (and fair-haired) beauties

Sunday, February 6, 2011

Moroccanoil - the originator and international leader of professional luxury Argan Oil-infused hair products - launched the new Moroccanoil Light last year and I am already hooked.

I was always worried about trying something, well, oily on my fine hair, so I was more than a little excited when they launched this lighter version. It suits my hair (and is suitable for fair-haired beauties) perfectly.

Formulated using Moroccanoil's original and ground-breaking Argan Oil-infused blend, the new Moroccanoil Light joins the Moroccanoil collection, including Moroccanoil Treatment, Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Shampoo, Moroccanoil Moisture Repair Conditioner, Moroccanoil Intense Hydrating Mask, Moroccanoil Intense Curl Cream, Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray and Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask.

Moroccanoil is well known with top professional stylists for its lightweight, natural-looking results and unique formula, which instantly absorbs into the hair without leaving residue. In fact, it has built quite the reputation as the best hair oil of its type around.

The premise of all Moroccanoil products is that they strengthen and recondition the hair while adding a glossy shine, with a frizz and static-free finish.

Celeb fans abound; red carpet looks for Sienna Miller, Rachel Weisz and Claire Danes, Emily Blunt at Cannes, Scarlett Johansson, and Bryce Dallas Howard have all been created using this product.

Moroccanoil Light (100ml) is $55, and it absorbs into the hair to restore elasticity, as well as strengthen and condition even weak, brittle hair. It helps shield against environmental 'stressors' and leaves a luxurious and noticeable shine to the hair without leaving buildup. It is best applied on damp hair and styled as usual. If you want to simplify your hair routine, this baby could be all your hair needs.

For more on Moroccanoil products, see: www.moroccanoil.com

All products are sold in good hair salons nationally.

Invisible Zinc: UV Silk Shield Foundation

Thursday, February 3, 2011

If you're all about saving time for your morning makeup routine, this product is a lifesaver in a tube.

Invisible Zinc has gone one step further in simplifying your daily beauty routine with the introduction of their new UV Silk Shield Foundation. (No liquids, no powders, no brushes, no creams - adore!).

This quick to apply, long lasting foundation stick provides flawless coverage and guaranteed IZ protection all in one.

The product combines sophisticated European cosmetic innovation with the award winning Invisble Zinc environmental protection. This two in one cream-to-powder foundation stick delivers the highest UV reflective barrier whilst offering all-weather water resistant coverage.

Here's the techie lowdown: highlighter performing pigments and spherical powders are the new technologies that erase imperfections, even out skin tone and perfect your complexion. This instant eraser stick glides smoothly onto your skin, delivering second skin coverage with a luminous fresh finish that isn’t shiny or powdery.

The in-built Invisible Zinc environmental shield guards from UV rays, pollutants and environmental aggressors, helping to combat the effects of everyday UVB and UVA rays. Designed to outlast the environment all day, the natural water resistance means long wearing, rain-proof, gym-proof and all weather perfect looking skin.

And here are the properties:

HIGHLIGHTER PERFORMING PIGMENTS (HPP): auto colour-matching; evens out complexion to give skin a natural matt and luminous finish with stay-true colour.

SPHERICAL POWDERS: cream-to-powder effect corrects imperfections with medium to high buildable coverage and soft, non-greasy texture and soothing sensation. Mimics natural skin.

YELLOW-BASED COLOUR: flattering on most skin types because it neutralises any pink or red undertones and results in a clearer and more even complexion

ZINC OXIDE SPF 30+: a natural mineral protectant and reflector of UVA+UVB rays. Tiny (non-nano) particles of natural Zinc Oxide form an unseen protective shield over the surface of the skin. No chemical sun blockers.

I love, love this product. I will admit to (safely, only a red lights!) being a fan of car-makeup, and this is my new staple. I have used stick foundations before but they are always cakey and dry and not as smooth to apply as I hope. This one never fails, every single time. Buy it - you'll be hooked.

UV SILK SHIELD FOUNDATION is RRP $42 (12g)

Stockists include: David Jones, Myer, Priceline, Terry White and leading pharmacies, dermatologists and cosmeticians nationwide. For more details, call 1300 738 850.

Burlesque and Sebastian Re-Shaper: a perfect match

Sunday, January 30, 2011

I am a bit nuts about Sebastian Professional haircare products - they are hands down the best quality hair styling staples around.

And now, Sebastian renowned 'Re-Shaper hairspray' has taken centre stage as the official hairspray of Sony Pictures movie Burlesque.

Since the birth of 'Shaper' hairspray in Hollywood 25 years ago, it has been a make up must-have on movie sets, for red carpet events and behind the scenes at editorial shoots.

Re-Shaper was used on-set as the working hairspray to shape the amazing styles that transformed the actors into their characters.

“To capture the essence of Burlesque, we created looks that were highly textured and voluminous for a sexy, dramatic effect,” says Martin Samuel, hair department head on the set of Burlesque. “The styles I created for the actresses had to withstand lots of movement, shine under bright lights and restyle quickly for scene changes, so I needed a hairspray that provides strong hold, but is also reworkable for easy brushing and re-styling.”

Sebastian Professional Re-Shaper is the first ever brushable hairspray of its kind. I used this long-lasting, strong-hold, humidity-resistant hairspray yesterday in the stupidly hot Sydney weather we're having and it kept its promise.

It's never stiff or sticky; the dry vapour formula allows for brushable, layerable, workable locks – keeping your style in place every time. I'm in love.

Re-shaper hairspray (400ml) is $31 or $9.50 for 50ml.

To apply, spray on damp hair and blow-dry for a root boost. Or spritz during blow-drying to capture tousled movement and protection from humidity. Or mist over finished style for day-to-night controlled hold. And you can restyle into any shape.

For stockists, see 1300 728 333 or go to http://www.sebastianprofessional.com/.

L'Oreal Star Products of 2010

Monday, January 24, 2011

I am a bit of a make-up philanderer - I will try anything and everything, and fall in love on a daily basis with myriad beauty products.

In all my years as a former beauty editor - and currently as beauty writer - I have found that I am really rather partial to L'Oreal products. A bit in love, actually.

In fact, L'Oreal eyeshadows are all I use (have you seen - and felt - these amazingly longlasting formulations and colour palettes? You'd be pretty loyal too!)

The L'Oreal Brow Stylist is my absolute staple - and brings to full circle my love affair with the brand: I first tried a L'Oreal product (a version of their brow pencil) back in 1998 in Memphis of all places. I came across a huge department store and was mesmerised by the huge L'Oreal display. As my brows have always been fair (Italian roots? You wouldn't think so!) this soon became my 'desert island' staple, my can't live without beauty must-have. If I do one thing to my face in the AM to look decent, it's my brows. This baby never fails me.

The gold and silver palettes I use often (beyond fab on eyelids) and the Elvive Total Repair Night Elixir leaves hair molten-soft without lifting a finger.

The mascaras, wowser - essential. The moisturisers - never failed me (tinted ones? Oh my - too brill). The Youth Code range takes skincare on a whole other level. And that Perfect Clean with the cute gizmo sponge - my skin feels so alive after I wash off my daily masterpiece.
So, what does L'Oreal have in store for us in 2011? Just you wait and see...
